Arts and Crafts was an influential design era of the late 19th century (c1880-1920) that developed earliest and most fully in the British Isles and spread across the British Empire and to the rest of Europe and America.
The designs were a response to industrialisation, mass production and a move away from more traditional craftsmanship.
Consequently, designs became lighter, brighter and more uncomplicated, with little sign of the Victorian embellishment of the Queen Ann period.
